Visa for London

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom. So, to travel to London you will need to apply for a visa unless you are from countries that are exempt from applying for any visa and are allowed to enter the UK. Visa for London will come under the Visa for the United Kingdom, as it is the capital city. The United Kingdom enforces one of the most stringent immigration laws in the world. So you need to make sure that whichever country you are coming from to visit London (UK) you have all the documents with you and are for you to get the visa.

There are countries whose citizen doesn’t require to apply for a Visa to enter the UK. Citizens from EU and EEA countries are exempt to apply for entry to the UK for travel, studies, business and immigration purposes. They only need to make sure that they have valid passports for the whole duration of the UK visit.

Exempt European Union (EU) Countries

Following are the European Union countries that don’t require any visa to enter the UK:

Austria France Malta
Belgium Germany Netherlands
Bulgaria Greece Poland
Croatia Hungary Portugal
Republic of Cyprus Ireland Romania
Czech Republic Italy Slovakia
Denmark Latvia Slovenia
Estonia Lithuania Spain
Finland Luxembourg Sweden

The European Economic Area (EEA) Countries

The European Economic Area (EEA) includes EU countries and:

  1. Iceland,
  2. Liechtenstein and
  3. Norway.

The EEA allows them to be part of the EU’s single market.

Switzerland is neither an EU nor EEA member but is part of the single market – this means Swiss nationals have the same rights to live and work in the UK as other EEA nationals.

There will be no change to the rights and status of EU citizens living in the UK until 2021. You and your family can apply for https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families to continue living in the UK after June 2021. The scheme will open fully by March 2019.

If you are not from an EEA Country you should have a valid passport to enter the UK. It must be valid for the whole time of your stay in the UK. You may also need a visa, depending on which country you are a citizen of and which country you are coming from.

Visa Changes Post Brexit

Post-Brexit the only changes that are brought to the UK travellers are that they must carry a valid passport during their time in the UK. Brexit has ushered changes for EU citizens visiting the UK. Previously, under the freedom of movement, EU citizens enjoyed seamless travel. Now, they face altered entry requirements, including a visa waiver system for short stays. The 90-day visa-free rule within 180 days applies, affecting travel duration and flexibility. Additionally, travellers must ensure compliance with health insurance and border checks. These changes influence travel planning, expenses, and experiences. While measures have been taken to facilitate smooth travel, the post-Brexit landscape calls for a more structured and cautious approach to visiting the UK for EU citizens.

Notting Hill Carnival London 2018

/

The 52nd Notting Hill Carnival this year showed an amazing array of colours showcased by revellers and participants. The carnival kicked off in west London with carousers showcasing a vibrant display. Pictures show smiling carnival-goers covered in body paint and bejewelled outfits as Notting Hill was transformed into a feast of music, dance and colour.

Floats are parading through the streets today as a million people flock to the two-day event over the Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the Caribbean and West Indian culture in the capital. The carnival featured steel bands, dance troupes and elaborate floats, with many among the crowds tossing paint and coloured powder at each other while dancing on the Notting hill streets.

A celebration of the Afro-Caribbean community, the two-day event has its roots in a 1964 London procession to bring people together despite racism and a lack of opportunity that blighted day-to-day life.

Police deployed metal-detecting arches to counter potential knife crime and have been given additional stop-and-search powers at this year’s carnival based on intelligence and after a spate of violent crime in London over the past week.

Almost 7,000 officers, some from the Metropolitan Police’s newly formed Violent Crime Task Force, are policing Monday’s event to “combat the threat of violent crime”.

This is up from the 6,100 on-duty officers at the less busy family day on Sunday. Undercover police as well as officers from the force’s firearms and dog units will be in place. The event attracted more than a million revellers to its floats, food stalls and music scene.

Heavy rain played a big spoiler, however, the attendance was still immense and police patrolling was well managed. Police made 133 arrests for a variety of weapon and drug-related offences, which has been a scene in past carnival events as well. A total of 20 weapons, including knives, were also seized as metal detecting knife arches were used at the event for the first time.

Millions of people took part in the event over the Bank Holiday weekend, and despite heavy rain on Sunday’s family day they proved they were out to party.

Instead of the t-shirt and shorts sported for the intensely hot weather of just a few weeks ago, there were umbrellas and a roaring trade for colourful plastic raincoats at Europe’s biggest street party. The community celebration carved its way around the streets in a mass of music, dancing, bold costumes and floats of soaked entertainers.

Luton is officially the best airport in London

Luton is officially the best airport in London

In quite frankly shocking news, Luton has been named the best airport in London by a new study.

The study by The Original Tour, analysed open data from all six London airports along with data from the UK Civil Aviation Authority to find this result.

Each of the six main airports that service London was given a percentage rating based on flight delays, queueing times, travel fares and connection times and Luton came out on top.

The study found that you can get to Luton in just 46 minutes from the city centre, compared to 30 minutes to get to Heathrow and 40 minutes to get to London City. It takes over an hour to get to both Gatwick and Stansted and London Southend takes the longest at 83 minutes.

Luton was found to be the overall winner due to it having the shortest average delay time (7.1 minutes), one of the shortest average queueing times (6.06 minutes) and one of the cheapest travel fares (£275.55 to North America).

Gatwick proved to have the shortest security queueing times at four minutes while you have to wait over 10 minutes on average in a security queue at Stansted.

London City was given the title of London’s worst airport after the data found that it is the most expensive airport to fly from, and has long security queueing times and a high chance of delays.

You can see the full ranking below:

  1. Luton
  2. Gatwick
  3. Stansted
  4. Heathrow
  5. London Southend
  6. London City

Luton is an often-overlooked London airport, but it might be time to consider it when booking your next flight. Want to know more details about the 6 London Airport? Check out a detailed post done by us detailing the London Airport and its services. Check out our London tour packages here.

Delhi to London Air India flight experience 3rd Feb 2018

/

So finally going from Delhi to London by Air India Flight on 3rd Feb 2018. Going to London again after Aug 2017 last year. This blog post is my experience of travelling from Delhi to London via Air India Flight. These are my honest views and experiences that I would like to share with you all the viewers and readers of the blog.

Planning and Booking Delhi to London Air India Flight

Last year I took an Emirates flight, it was awesome. This time I looked at booking flights via the MakeMyTrip website. Was looking for a cheap flight from Delhi to London this time, as was running low on budget, but as usual high on spirits. The plan was to get a morning flight from Delhi and arrive around the evening in London so that he gets his work done and come to pick me up at the airport. As per my criteria, I started looking and looked at no other website but MakeMyTrip, because I personally like this website, have travelled a lot locally within India and booked hotels and flights in the past. So finally I got a good deal and booked an Air India Flight.

Inside Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3
Inside Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3

Check-in and Boarding Experience

Checked in time, and boarded the Air India aircraft number AI – 111 from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Terminal 3. The flight took off like 20 mins late almost. Sat in an Air India Flight after a very long time I would say after 2 years or so. The plane which I boarded this time was Dreamliner Boeing 787-8. The flight started about 20 Mins late. That was all right really. I got my seat which was 16J and had no issues in boarding. All fine sat down. The flight was full and had a noisy crowd I would say.

Entertainment and Food On-Board

Opened up the Entertainment screen in front of me. And to my surprise, all the Hollywood movies were dated like I don’t more than a year old. I was totally disappointed by the fact that they had no new movies to offer. I already started comparing my experience with my last flight with Emirates. And then the snack time came. I generally drink red wine, or sparkling water while on the journey. So I asked for the usual red wine. And they didn’t have any. So they gave me the white whine instead. I was feeling utterly disappointed already by two experiences and was hoping the food would be good, as the last time when I flew with Air India, I remembered I had a good meal. Which was the reason I booked the flight with Air India again.

The food was average, I mean for the price just below this I was getting an Emirates flight, the only reason I didn’t book Emirates this time, was that it was not a direct flight and I wanted to reach London without any journey breaks. If I had known that the service and the standards would be so down in Air India this time, I wouldn’t have booked the flight with Air India in the first place. But there you go, this is the experience I had with them. And probably the last time I am going with them, Anyway, the tea time came and the shadiness continued, with cheap plastics replacing good quality stainless steel cutlery. They gave chocolate and a cheese-stuffed croissant, with cheap plastics all around.

Air India Delhi to London flight duration

It was a 9-hour and 40 mins flight, it was super boring and no good movies to watch. Overall I had been disappointed with Air India’s International flight service from Delhi to London. Personally, I don’t think I am planning to fly with Air India any time in the near future. Well if you are looking for a direct cheap flight from Delhi to London, where you are least bothered with infotainment available on the flight and don’t care about the service, not sure why you fly with Air India. There are better options in the market like British Airways, Jet Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.

London’s 2018 new year parade

London’s 2018 new year parade

Even though I missed going to the parade, here is a glimpse of what all we missed from the parade. I missed it last year too, but never the late, we can always look at the pictures taken by spectators and ask them to post/share them on our Facebook page. Around 500,000 visitors gather along the parade route in the centre of London to watch more than 10,000 parade performers on the first day of the year 2018. A surge in Indian tourists brings big spending to a cheaper London

A surge in Indian tourists brings big spending to a cheaper London. Some key statistics are below:

  • Spending by Indian tourists in London’s West End was up 38 per cent year-on-year in July 2017
  • Only visitors from China and the U.S. spent more money in London
  • Over the past decade, the value of the international Indian tourist market grew by 150 per cent

China’s recent Golden Week holiday saw an influx of Chinese tourists to London, but a different Asian consumer has increasingly been spending money in the U.K. capital.

Spending by Indian tourists in London’s West End was up 38 per cent year-on-year in July, according to the New West End Company, a body that represents the central London shopping and theatre district.

Visitors from the world’s second most populous country ranked third for international spending in the West End in July, outstripping typically high-spending Middle Eastern visitors, and falling behind only China and the U.S.

Economic growth in India is expected to rise to 7.2 per cent in the fiscal year of 2017/18, and 7.5 per cent the following year, according to the World Bank. India is home to 1.3 billion people, trailing only China’s 1.4 billion population; by a United Nations estimate, India is set to overtake China’s population by 2024.

However, according to the New West End Company, there was a marked lag between the spending power of Indian consumers in comparison to the Chinese an average of 677 and 1,478 respectively in July. VisitBritain, the U.K.’s tourism authority, said that the average spending by Indian tourists in the U.K. was 74 per cent higher than the all-market average.

Sterling, despite recovering some losses since its initial drop following June 2016’s Brexit vote, is still down roughly 11 per cent since before the referendum. International tourist numbers have since been on the up, sparked by cheaper prices.

VisitBritain, in a report on Indian tourism to the U.K. out last Thursday, said that over the past decade, the value of the international Indian tourist market had grown by 150 per cent, rising from $6.2 billion in 2005 to $16.4 billion in 2016.

The report said that the U.K. was the 10th most popular destination for travel, and second to France in Europe, with Indian tourists preferring to visit Gulf countries and the U.S.

India’s overhaul of its Goods and Services Tax was launched on July 1, resulting in a fall in the taxation of economy flights from 5 to 6 per cent, while business class flights are now taxed more at 12 per cent, up from 9 per cent.
