London weather: it’s getting super hot and humid in the city

Many of us rejoiced at the news that this weekend would see scorching temperatures.

For too long, Londoners have had to battle humid, cloudy days as well as torrential thunderstorms. But not anymore.

The hottest day of the year is here – with Heathrow being the first place in the UK to reach a whopping 34C.

Today (Saturday, June 29) is an absolute scorcher – but exactly how hot could it get as what some are calling a ‘tongue of fire’ hits the city?

Met Office forecasters say Saturday could be the hottest June day the UK has ever seen since records began 178 years ago, possibly breaking June’s 35.6C UK record, set on June 29, 1957, in Camden Town.

It could even be hotter than the Caribbean and Hawaii for some, as the 1,500-mile wide heatwave nudging France’s 44.1C (111F) temperature record extends to Britain.

The hottest temperatures are expected in London, with the mercury hitting a whopping 36C.

Right now, it’s an impressive 34C across the city in places such as Heathrow, Southwark, Hackney and Greenwich.

Croydon is also at a whopping 33C as of 3pm.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the low 30s for the remainder of the day and even into the evening, so you’d better make sure you’re slapping on the suncream.

What has the Met Office said?

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Very hot inland on Saturday with mostly unbroken sunshine throughout the day.

“Feeling a little less hot along the English Channel coast with light onshore winds. Maximum temperature?35C.”
